The present work, ascribed to the Italian school of the seventeenth century, represents St. John the Evangelist through a formulation of remarkable spiritual intensity and pictorial refinement. The figure of the saint is accompanied by the eagle, his iconographic attribute par excellence, which symbolizes the elevation of his theological thought and the mystical depth of his Gospel. This element not only identifies him, but also underlines his uniqueness among the apostles, traditionally associated with a more elevated and contemplative vision of the Christian message.
St. John is depicted as a beardless youth, following the iconographic convention that distinguishes him from the other evangelists, and thus reinforcing his idealized and timeless character. In one of his hands he holds an open book in which we can read the opening words of his Gospel in Latin, "In principio erat Verbum..." ("In the beginning was the Word..."), a quotation of profound theological content that alludes directly to the mystery of the Incarnation and the divine nature of Christ. The presence of the pen, on the other hand, emphasizes his role as sacred author and transmitter of the divine word.
From the stylistic point of view, the work is fully inscribed in the postulates of the Italian Baroque, especially in the use of chiaroscuro as a fundamental expressive resource. The figure emerges strongly from a dark background, modeled by a directed light that accentuates the volumes and focuses attention on its introspective expression. This light treatment not only gives corporeality to the image, but also intensifies its spiritual dimension, creating an effect of recollection that invites contemplation.
