BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Flemish school; 17th century.
"The Resurrection of Christ".
Oil on copper.
Measurements: 22,5 x 16,5 cm; 27,5 x 21 cm (frame).
In this copper, the artist has represented the culminating moment of the Resurrection of Christ, conceived as an authentic burst of light and spiritual triumph. The scene is organized in a break of glory in the form of a luminous mandorla, within which the monumental figure of Christ rises with strength and solemnity, dominating the celestial space. His body, resplendent, ascends victoriously as he raises his arm in a gesture of power and redemption, directing his gaze towards the divine light, in clear allusion to God the Father. In contrast, the lower part of the composition takes place on the earthly plane, where the tomb and the soldiers bear witness to the event. One of them appears asleep in the center, a habitual resource in this iconography to underline the human incapacity to understand the divine mystery. This contrast between the human world and the heavenly world reinforces the theological message of the scene: Christ has transcended death and definitively leaves the earthly realm to fulfill the salvific design.
The work, in addition to faithfully following the traditional iconographic scheme, stands out for its chromatic richness and careful detail. The golden tones that envelop the figure of Christ contrast with the darker, earthy colors of the lower register, creating a clear division between the divine and the human. However, within this opposition, the artist introduces a remarkable attention to detail, visible in the gestures, expressions and attitudes of each of the characters, which brings dynamism and verisimilitude to the scene.
This type of work finds an interesting echo in the Baroque painting of the Flemish school, characterized by its great visual intensity, its descriptive thoroughness and its extraordinary mastery of light and color. In Flemish Baroque, religious scenes are charged with drama, movement and sensory richness, combining spiritual exaltation with a strong material presence of the world represented. Light often plays a fundamental expressive role, modeling the figures and accentuating the emotional impact of the scene.
