"The Conversion of St. Paul".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 50 x 75 cm; 76 x 101 cm (frame).
The work deals with one of the most decisive episodes of Christianity: the conversion of St. Paul on the road to Damascus. This theme, of enormous spiritual and historical relevance, symbolizes the radical transformation of the individual through a divine experience. It is not only a religious event, but a universal metaphor for redemption, the fall and moral rebirth, which explains its repeated presence in Baroque painting. The quality of the work is manifested in the dramatic use of light and composition. An intense chiaroscuro predominates, directing the eye towards the narrative core, generating an atmosphere of tension and mystery. The brushstroke, loose but precise in the points of greatest interest, suggests movement and chaos, reinforcing the idea of a sudden and violent event. The scene is charged with dynamism: fallen bodies, horses in tension and agitated figures contribute to transmit the impact of the moment of revelation.
As for the school, the painting is clearly in the Italian tradition of the 17th century, marked by the influence of Caravaggio and Baroque naturalism. Distinctive features such as scenic dramatism, the strong contrast of light and the interest in representing reality with emotional rawness are appreciated. The scene does not idealize: it shows the violence, confusion and humanity of the characters, bringing the sacred episode closer to the spectator.
These features are reflected in the work through a closed and dark composition, where the light seems to burst in an almost supernatural way. The presence of the horse, a recurring element in this theme, accentuates Paul's physical and symbolic fall. The crowd and the warlike or tumultuous surroundings underscore the contrast between the earthly world and the irruption of the divine.
This painting responds to the spirit of the Counter-Reformation, when the Church promoted powerful and emotional images to reinforce faith. In this sense, the work not only narrates a biblical episode, but also seeks to move the viewer, to make him or her a participant in the experience and, ultimately, to provoke spiritual reflection.
