This work attributed to the burgalesa school is a representative example of the Spanish religious painting of the first Renaissance with strong Gothic roots. The scene represents the Crucifixion of Christ on Mount Golgotha: In the center appears Jesus Christ crucified, with crown of thorns and bleeding from the wounds. To his left, the Virgin Mary, dressed in black and red, shows an attitude of recollection and pain. To the right, St. John the Evangelist holds a book, symbol of his role as author of the Gospel. Flanking Christ, the two thieves (traditionally Dimas and Gestas) also appear crucified. Above the cross is the inscription INRI ("Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum"), typical of this type of representation.
It combines oil and tempera techniques on panel, something common in the transition from Gothic to Renaissance.
The figures present restrained expressiveness, with emphasis on spiritual suffering rather than extreme physical drama. The background includes an idealized walled city, possibly evoking Jerusalem, but with European features. The panel format with a triangular top suggests that it may have been part of an altarpiece.
The so-called "Burgos school" developed around the city of Burgos, an important artistic center in the 16th century thanks to its wealth and commercial connections. In this period Gothic elements persist (rigidity, frontality) and Renaissance influences are incorporated (volume, incipient naturalism).
