BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Attributed to PAUWELS CASTEELS ( 1649 - 1677) and workshop.
"The triumphal arrival of King David".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 111.5 x 146.5 cm; 127 x 161 cm (frame).
The scene displays a dynamic and festive composition where the biblical episode is transformed into a ceremonial spectacle of movement, color and music, revealing the ability of the Flemish Baroque to turn the sacred story into an intensely theatrical experience, in fact, the piece is probably cut because it lacks the presence of King David, which probably originally would be in the right area of the composition.
The work reflects several characteristic features of the Flemish school of Antwerp close to the painting of Pauwels Casteels. The space is constructed by means of hallmarks of light and a dense chromatic atmosphere where warm, ochre and reddish tones predominate, occasionally illuminated by flashes of gold and white that direct the viewer's gaze. The figures, wrapped in undulating fabrics and elegant postures, show a clear influence of the great Rubensian tradition, visible in the compositional dynamism and the theatricality of the whole. The vaporous treatment of some anatomies and the gestural freedom of the brushstroke also suggest the participation of the workshop, a common practice in the Flemish production of the seventeenth century, especially in works of large format or complex narrative elaboration.
Pauwels Casteels developed his activity in Antwerp, one of the great European artistic centers of the time. Admitted as a master in the guild of St. Luke around 1649-1650, he worked in a context deeply marked by the heritage of Peter Paul Rubens and by the enormous international demand for Flemish painting. Although he is especially known today for his battle scenes and historical compositions, he also cultivated mythological and biblical subjects, often conceived as large settings populated by multiple figures. His works circulated widely thanks to dealers such as the Forchondt family, whose commercial network extended Antwerp painting to Central and Eastern Europe, contributing to the spread of Flemish Baroque taste beyond the Netherlands.
Particularly interesting in this composition is the way in which the religious and the profane seem to intertwine. The dances, musical instruments and sinuous movements recall iconographic models associated with bacchanals or mythological triumphs, genres that enjoyed enormous popularity in Flemish painting. This ambiguity was characteristic of the Baroque: the biblical story was enriched by theatrical and sensual resources capable of capturing the viewer's attention and intensifying the emotional experience of the image.
