BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Circle of MARIANO SALVADOR MAELLA (Valencia, 1739 - Madrid, 1819).
"Virgin of Carmen.
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 107 x 68 cm.
The present painting, attributed to the circle of Mariano Salvador Maella, develops a celestial composition of marked devotional sensitivity, where the Marian figure appears accompanied by the Child Jesus and surrounded by angels among vaporous clouds, following iconographic models deeply rooted in the Carmelite spirituality.
The stylistic relationship with Mariano Salvador Maella is evident both in the delicacy of the figures and in the atmospheric treatment of light and color. Maella, one of the most prominent painters of the court of Charles III and Charles IV, developed a pictorial language that combined the last resonances of the late Baroque with elements of neoclassical academicism promoted by the Royal Academy of San Fernando. Although the work still maintains the chromatic softness and compositional dynamism inherited from the Baroque, it also reveals a tendency towards the serene idealization and formal clarity typical of eighteenth-century academic painting. The presence of the scapular is the main identifying attribute of this Marian devotion, linked to the Carmelite Order and especially widespread in Spain since the 17th century. According to tradition, the Virgin gave the scapular to Saint Simon Stock as a symbol of spiritual protection and salvation. In the painting, both Mary and the Child participate in this symbolic gesture, reinforcing the devotional character of the image and its catechetical function.
Particularly significant is the format of the canvas, topped at the top by an architectural curvature. This detail allows us to state with considerable certainty that the work was originally conceived to be integrated into a specific architectural structure, probably an altarpiece, altar attic, niche or devotional chapel. This type of adapted format was common in 18th century Spanish religious painting, as many compositions were specifically designed to visually dialogue with Baroque or Rococo architectural frameworks. Likewise, the ornamental character of the composition reinforces this hypothesis. The pyramidal arrangement of the figures, the ascending movement of the clouds and the integration of the cherubs in the lateral margins suggest a visual conception conceived to be contemplated from below, probably elevated on an altar.
