BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Italian School of Piedmont; c. 1600.
“The Nativity of the Virgin.”
Oil on canvas.
Shows signs of restoration.
Measurements: 67 x 73 cm.
The scene depicts an episode from apocryphal tradition; although this event does not appear in the canonical Gospels, it was widely depicted in European visual culture due to its importance within Marian devotion. The composition places the viewer inside a domestic room where several women are tending to the newborn. At the center of the scene, the bathing of the infant becomes the main narrative focus, while other figures assist with the tasks associated with childbirth. The emphasis on domestic aspects reflects one of the most significant trends in late 16th-century Italian painting. In contrast to the idealized balance of the High Renaissance, artists began to focus on observing reality, expressing emotions, and creating scenes that felt more intimate to the viewer.
From a stylistic perspective, the painting reveals characteristics typical of the Piedmontese school, a region situated between the major artistic centers of Milan and Genoa and under French cultural influence. Piedmontese painters adopted models from late Italian Mannerism, evident in the figures’ elegant anatomies, the sinuous folds of the garments, and the carefully organized composition. However, they also incorporated a growing emphasis on naturalism. Color likewise plays a fundamental role. The intense red drapery dominating the background lends depth and solemnity to the scene, while creating a powerful contrast with the soft tones of the garments and skin tones. The lighting, still uniform and far removed from the strong chiaroscuro of the High Baroque, delicately models the figures and contributes to the narrative clarity of the composition as a whole.
