BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Italian School; 18th century.
“Saint Catherine of Siena.”
Oil on canvas mounted on board.
Signed.
Measurements: 82 x 63 cm; 99 x 80 cm (frame).
At the center of the composition, Saint Catherine appears kneeling, dressed in the black-and-white habit of the Dominican Order. Her humble and contemplative demeanor, together with the gesture of extending her hands toward Christ, expresses the saint’s absolute surrender to the divine will. Before her, the Risen Christ—identified by the wounds of the Passion and the red mantle symbolizing the redemptive sacrifice—engages in a spiritual dialogue that forms the narrative core of the image. The presence of the Virgin Mary, standing behind the saint, reinforces the heavenly nature of the event and acts as a mediator between the human and divine worlds.
The work incorporates various symbolic elements that enrich its meaning. The white lilies, associated with purity, allude to Catherine’s virginity and holiness. The crown of thorns that the saint holds or wears evokes her desire to spiritually share in Christ’s sufferings, while the rosary refers to the practice of contemplative prayer. At the bottom is a skull, a traditional symbol of meditation on death and the transience of earthly existence, recalling one of the fundamental ideas of Baroque spirituality: the need to orient one’s life toward eternal salvation.
The painting reflects characteristics typical of the Italian religious tradition that continued to develop throughout the 18th century. Although Europe was experiencing the emergence of new artistic languages, many Italian regions maintained a strong production of devotional images intended for churches, convents, and spaces for private worship. This work features a clear and hierarchical composition, in which the sacred figures occupy an orderly arrangement that facilitates an immediate understanding of the religious message.
