BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Flamenco School; first half of the 17th century.
“Saint Francis Comforted by the Angels.”
Oil on canvas mounted on wood panel.
It has a 19th-century frame.
Measurements: 38 x 26.5 cm; 44.5 x 34 cm (frame).
The composition centers on the figure of the saint, whose leaning posture, ecstatic face turned toward the heavens, and half-closed eyes suggest a state of deep contemplation. The angels, depicted with delicacy and affectionate gestures, establish an intimate connection with the subject, reinforcing the idea of heavenly assistance. The presence of the stigmata on Saint Francis’s hands alludes to one of the most important episodes in his hagiography: the reception of Christ’s wounds, a symbol of his spiritual identification with the Passion.
The painting clearly reflects some of the essential characteristics of the 17th-century Flemish school. Following the consolidation of Catholicism in the Southern Netherlands, art became a powerful instrument of devotion and religious persuasion. Flemish painters developed a visual language capable of moving the viewer through the realism of the figures, the expressiveness of the faces, and the dramatic use of light. In this work, the hallmarks of a dark background and illuminated flesh tones draw the viewer’s attention to the miraculous episode, creating an atmosphere of spiritual contemplation.
Likewise, the composition reveals the influence of the international Baroque style and, in particular, the models disseminated by the circle of Peter Paul Rubens, whose work profoundly shaped Flemish art of the period. Although the work has a more intimate scale and a restrained emotional intensity, it shares with the Rubensian tradition an interest in human emotions, chromatic richness, and the narrative power of the figures. The sweeping folds of the fabrics, the softness of the light transitions, and the physicality of the figures all contribute to giving the scene a tangible and intimate presence. Another characteristic aspect is the combination of naturalism and spirituality. Flemish artists sought to depict sacred events with a credible and human appearance, so that the viewer could identify with them emotionally.
From a historical perspective, the work must be understood within the context of the Catholic Counter-Reformation, when religious images took on a primary didactic and devotional function. Depictions of exemplary saints—especially such popular figures as Saint Francis of Assisi—sought to inspire piety among the faithful and reinforce the values of humility, penance, and spiritual devotion. This painting fully fulfills that purpose: it not only narrates a miraculous episode but also invites the viewer to participate emotionally in the saint’s mystical experience.
