“Allegory of Charity.”
Oil on canvas.
It has a 19th-century frame.

The work is part of the allegorical tradition that developed in 17th-century Italy, when painting became an effective tool for conveying the moral and religious values promoted by the spirituality of the Counter-Reformation. Through an accessible and emotive image, the artist transforms an everyday scene of motherhood into a symbolic representation of a fundamental Christian virtue. The composition depicts a woman surrounded by several small children, one of whom is being breastfed while others rest or seek her protection.
From a stylistic standpoint, the work fully reflects the characteristics of Italian Baroque painting. The scene is constructed through a dynamic yet balanced composition, in which the figures are grouped around the woman, forming a scene of great intimacy and emotional closeness. The lighting draws the viewer’s attention to the faces and bodies, modeling the forms with delicate hallmarks of light and shadow. The rich colors of the drapery, especially the intense red curtains in the background, lend solemnity to the scene and create a contrast with the soft tones of the skin. The artist also demonstrates a notable interest in the expression of emotions, evident in the characters’ gazes and gestures—one of the most characteristic features of Baroque art.
