BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Italian School; 18th century.
“The Nativity.”
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 130 x 95 cm.
The narrative focus is on the Child, humbly laid in a basket evoking the manger, while Mary leans toward him in a gesture of tenderness and devotion. The shepherds, kneeling and astonished by the event, represent humanity recognizing the sacred nature of the birth. The presence of the stable animals and the simple rural architecture reinforce the idea of humility that characterizes this episode, highlighting the hallmarks of the spiritual grandeur of the event and the modesty of its setting.
The painting adheres to the principles of the late Italian Baroque tradition, which remained influential throughout much of the 18th century. The composition is organized through a triangular arrangement of the main figures, a device that lends stability and visual harmony. The lighting plays a fundamental role in directing attention toward the Child and the gestures of adoration surrounding him, creating a delicate contrast between the illuminated areas and the dim background of the stable. The rich colors of the Virgin’s robes, dominated by traditional shades of red and blue, introduce a note of solemnity and nobility, while the fluid brushwork and soft modeling of the faces contribute to the atmosphere of serenity and restrained emotion. The artist emphasizes the expressiveness of the gestures and gazes, which convey the miraculous nature of the event without resorting to overly theatrical effects.
The work is fully in line with the 18th-century Italian school, heir to the great religious tradition developed over the preceding centuries. In this context, the depiction of the Nativity is not limited to illustrating a biblical episode but seeks to evoke the viewer’s contemplation and piety through an accessible and moving image. The combination of naturalism, idealization, and devotional sensibility reveals the continuity of Baroque models adapted to a more refined and elegant taste, characteristic of the eighteenth century.
