This work depicts one of the most widely recognized episodes in the iconography of Saint Anthony of Padua: the miraculous vision of the Infant Jesus, who appears before the saint as a reward for his profound life of prayer and contemplation. The scene dispenses with secondary narrative elements to focus on the spiritual moment of the encounter. The composition follows the principles of Caravaggist-inspired Italian Baroque painting. A powerful beam of light emanates from the figure of the Child, whose naked body glows against a background shrouded in shadow. This striking contrast of light, a legacy of Caravaggio’s innovations, not only defines the forms but also underscores the supernatural nature of the apparition. Before him, Saint Anthony appears clad in his Franciscan habit, depicted with restrained humanity and an expression of inner contemplation.
The work can be stylistically linked to Giovanni Antonio Galli (1585–1651), one of Caravaggio’s most distinctive followers. Rather than the theatricality or extreme drama characteristic of other Caravaggisti, Spadarino developed a pictorial language marked by psychological subtlety and an almost intimate sensitivity. As various scholars have noted, his figures convey a sense of human fragility and vulnerability that sets them apart within the 17th-century Roman art scene. In this painting, the saint’s absorbed gaze and the Child’s almost melancholic serenity evoke precisely that contemplative and elegiac tone that critics have identified as one of the artist’s most personal traits.
From a formal standpoint, the dark atmosphere, the compositional economy, and the gentle transition of light across the flesh tones stand out—elements that place the work within the context of Roman Caravaggism from the first half of the 17th century. Rather than depicting a spectacular miracle, the painter invites the viewer to participate in an intimate spiritual experience, where light becomes a visible metaphor for divine revelation. The result is an image of profound devotional intensity that combines naturalism, restrained emotion, and refined lighting—qualities that bring this work closer to Spadarino’s artistic universe and to the most sensitive currents of the Italian Baroque.
