“Saint Joseph with the Child.”
Oil on canvas.
With an important 18th-century frame, showing signs of restoration and some damage.

The painting up for auction follows the iconographic style popularized by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo in his *Saint Joseph with the Child* from around 1665–1666, from which it adopts the intimate and affectionate depiction of the relationship between the two figures, the idealized youth of the saint, the presence of the flowering staff, and the atmosphere of soft luminosity characteristic of the Sevillian master. However, it is not a literal copy of the model, but rather an interpretation that introduces a more synthetic treatment of forms and a more restrained color palette—features that demonstrate the assimilation and reinterpretation of Murillo’s prototypes by an 18th-century painter of the Andalusian or Spanish tradition.
The frame, made of carved and gilded wood, is a magnificent example of mid-18th-century Rococo ornamentation. It features a highly dynamic mixtilinear profile, profusely decorated with exuberant motifs of rocaille, scrollwork, acanthus leaves, and plant elements in pronounced relief, which unfold asymmetrically along the entire outline. At the top, a crowned shield or cartouche stands out, integrated into a composition of volutes and foliage, while the corners and base are embellished with mascarons and phytomorphic motifs that accentuate the scenographic character of the whole. The carving, designed to enhance the decorative effect of the canvas, retains traces of its original gilding on a bol, now partially worn, which contributes to its historical patina. Based on its formal and technical characteristics, the frame can be dated to around the mid-18th century and appears to be contemporary with the painting, forming a set of remarkable decorative quality.
