BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

DAVID TENIERS III (Antwerp, 1638–Brussels, 1685).
“Peasants.”
Oil on oak panel.
It has a 19th-century frame.
Measurements: 10.5 x 14.5 cm; 14.5 x 18.5 cm (frame).
This work, attributed to David Teniers III, is part of the tradition of Flemish genre painting, which was highly prized during the 17th century. The scene depicts a group of peasants gathered in an open space, engaged in the activities and interactions typical of daily life—a recurring theme in the artistic output of the Teniers family and widely popular in the Netherlands at the time.
A descendant of one of Flanders’ most distinguished artistic dynasties, David Teniers III was the son of David Teniers II and, on his mother’s side, a grandson of the Brueghel family. His training, which likely took place in his father’s studio, allowed him to assimilate both the refined elegance of portraiture found in artists such as Anton van Dyck and Gonzales Coques and a taste for popular and rural scenes inherited from his predecessors.
In this composition, the figures blend naturally into the landscape, creating a dynamic and balanced scene. The painter shows a particular interest in characterization; the figures’ postures and expressions lend liveliness and authenticity to the whole. The depiction of peasant life is approached from a close and observant perspective, highlighting the spontaneity of the actions and the everyday atmosphere that envelops the scene.
The careful application of color, the treatment of light, and the meticulous attention to detail in the clothing and surroundings reveal the artist’s solid training within the Flemish school. Furthermore, the work reflects an interest in tangible reality and popular customs that characterized much of the pictorial production in the Low Countries during the Modern Age.
This painting is a representative example of the continuity of the family-oriented models developed by the Teniers, reinterpreted by David III through an elegant and balanced style that also found expression in the tapestry cartoons commissioned by the prestigious workshops in Brussels and Lille.
