BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Italian Caravaggist master; first half of the 17th century.
“The Flagellation of Christ.”
Oil on canvas. Relined stretcher.
Measurements: 137 x 122.5 cm.
The artist concentrates all the narrative tension within a small, dark space, eliminating any extraneous elements to direct the viewer’s gaze toward the suffering of Christ’s body and the brutality of his executioners. This ability to transform a sacred narrative into a scene of intense humanity became an emblem and one of the most distinctive characteristics of 17th-century Caravaggist painting. Far from depicting a heroic or triumphant image, the painter presents a vulnerable and dejected Christ, his head bowed and his body overcome by the weight of the violence inflicted by his executioners. A interplay of opposing forces generates a powerful dramatic tension that places the viewer as a direct witness to the event.
The work reveals a clear connection to the models developed by Caravaggio, whose revolutionary conception of painting profoundly transformed European art in the early 17th century. The intense chiaroscuro, the physical proximity of the figures, the absence of idealization, and the direct depiction of emotions all point to the naturalistic aesthetic that made Caravaggio one of the most influential artists of his time. Likewise, the painting draws interesting parallels with the work of Battistello Caracciolo, the leading proponent of Caravaggism in Naples. The monumental scale of the figures, the atmospheric density, and the expressive severity of the characters are reminiscent of Caracciolo’s interpretations of Passion themes, characterized by a profound sense of religious tragedy and intense emotional charge. Similarly, the work can be linked to the compositions of Louis Finson, one of Caravaggio’s earliest followers, whose painting is distinguished by narrative rawness, strong light hallmarks, and the prominence given to figures depicted at nearly life-size.
The iconography of the Flagellation occupied a central place in the spirituality of the Counter-Reformation. Following the Council of Trent, the Church promoted images capable of inspiring devotion through emotion and empathy, favoring depictions that brought sacred episodes closer to the human experience. In this context, Caravaggio’s style found particularly fertile ground, as its visual language made it possible to transform Gospel narratives into scenes of immediate psychological intensity.
