The presentation of the chasuble to Saint Ildefonso was a very popular subject in the painting of the period, as it epitomized the Church’s doctrinal authority and the Marian devotion characteristic of Spanish spirituality. The scene alludes to the miraculous moment when the Archbishop of Toledo receives a chasuble from the Virgin Mary as a reward for his defense of the faith. In this interpretation, the miraculous event is transformed into a solemn liturgical ceremony. Instead of directly depicting the Virgin’s apparition, the painter opts for an iconographic solution in which several prelates clothe the saint in the chasuble.
Stylistically, the work is fully in keeping with the Sevillian school of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Following the splendor achieved by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Sevillian painting evolved toward a more serene and devotional style, in which the naturalism inherited from the previous century was combined with a growing decorative refinement. In this context, the artist shows a particular interest in the meticulous depiction of liturgical fabrics, gold embroidery, miters, and episcopal croziers. The composition exhibits characteristics typical of the late Sevillian Baroque. The soft, directional lighting shapes the forms without resorting to strong tenebrist hallmarks, fostering a quiet and contemplative atmosphere. The figures have individualized faces and restrained expressions, far removed from the more intense theatricality of the High Baroque, while the palette of ochre tones, warm whites, and golds lends chromatic unity and a sense of liturgical solemnity.
