BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Flamenco School; first half of the 17th century.
“The Adoration of the Magi.”
Oil on copper.
It has a late 19th-century frame.
Measurements: 27 x 22 cm; 49 x 39 cm (frame).
This subject, widely depicted in European art, allowed artists to develop complex compositions that combined religious narrative, symbolic richness, and a full range of pictorial techniques. The scene is organized around the figure of the Virgin and Child, positioned as the spiritual center of the composition, while the Three Wise Men and their entourage are arranged around them in an attitude of reverence. The diversity of characters, gestures, and gazes introduces a strong narrative quality, characteristic of Flemish Baroque painting, which sought to depict not only the sacred event but also human emotion in the presence of the divine.
The use of oil on copper reflects a highly valued practice in Flemish workshops of the 16th and 17th centuries. This support, with its smooth, non-absorbent surface, allowed for great precision in detail, meticulous application of color, and a special luminosity in the flesh tones, fabrics, and ornamental elements. The rich color palette—evident in the intense reds, whites, and earthy tones—along with the hallmarks of light and shadow, reflect the influence of the Baroque style and the Flemish preference for the material quality of surfaces.
