BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Flamenco School, 16th century.
“Saint Magdalene, Penitent.”
Oil on panel.
Period frame.
In good overall condition.
Measurements: 61 x 50 cm; 83 x 73 cm (frame).

This panel depicts one of the most widespread devotional iconographies in 16th-century Europe: Magdalene withdrawn into a life of penance, devoted to prayer and contemplation of the Passion of Christ. The saint is depicted accompanied by a specific set of attributes: the crucifix refers to Christ’s sacrifice; the book, to spiritual meditation; the skull serves as a memento mori, a reminder of the transience of existence; and the luxurious jar of ointment directly identifies her, alluding to the perfume with which, according to Christian tradition, she anointed Jesus’ feet.

The composition reflects a style rooted in Mannerism. The figure, with pearlescent skin tones and delicate gestures, adopts a withdrawn posture, while her abundant hair and the angular folds of her robes introduce a sinuous rhythm. The intense pinkish-red is a hallmark of the scene, contrasting with the cool tones of the tunic and the rocky background, conceived as a place of retreat. On the left, the small Calvary transforms the scene into a depiction of the saint’s inner meditation rather than a narrative episode.

The panel support facilitates precise execution, particularly evident in the modeling of the face, hands, fabrics, and the gilded vessel. The meticulous depiction of objects, the precision of the drawing, and the rich, enamel-like color are in keeping with the 16th-century Flemish pictorial tradition. The rich color palette and the meticulous rendering of the objects combine with the penitential theme, establishing the contrast between earthly beauty and spiritual renunciation that forms the symbolic core of the image.
