This portrait dates from a transitional period between the solemn aesthetic of the reign of Louis XIV and the sensibility of the early Rococo. The young woman is depicted in a half-length pose, turned slightly toward the viewer, with a serene expression and a direct gaze that lends the portrait a remarkable psychological presence. The artist avoids any theatrical excess and focuses attention on the harmony of the face, the softness of the modeling, and the richness of the fabrics—characteristics typical of the finest French painting at the turn of the century.
