BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Valencian School; second half of the 16th century.
“Mary Magdalene.”
Oil on panel.
Measurements: 42 x 25 cm; 65.5 x 48 cm (frame).
This painting depicts Mary Magdalene, one of the most revered saints in the Christian tradition, identifiable by the elegant perfume bottle she holds in her right hand—an attribute that refers to the ointment with which, according to the Gospels, she anointed Christ’s feet. Her figure stands with elegant grandeur against an open landscape, silhouetted against a vast, cloud-filled sky that lends depth and a distinct atmospheric quality to the composition.
The work can be attributed to the Valencian school of the second half of the 16th century, one of the most prominent centers of painting during the Spanish Renaissance. During this period, Valencia experienced a remarkable artistic flourishing, fueled by its intense commercial activity and close ties to Italy—circumstances that fostered the early assimilation of Italian Renaissance models. Added to this was the persistence of the Hispano-Flemish tradition, giving rise to a distinctive artistic language characterized by compositional harmony, meticulous drawing, a delicate treatment of faces, and a rich chromatic sensibility. The influence of masters such as Juan de Juanes and his wide circle is particularly evident in this type of devotional image, designed to inspire contemplation and spiritual reflection. The figure’s serenity, the soft rendering of the skin tones, the refinement of the folds, and the idealization of the features fully reflect the aesthetic ideals of the Valencian Renaissance, in which balance and beauty were placed at the service of religious expression.
