After DIEGO VELÁZQUEZ; 19th century.
“Jester with a Dog.”
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 139 x 98.5 cm.
This interesting painting is part of the long tradition of copies and interpretations of the works of Diego Velázquez, whose body of work was, from the 18th century and especially during the 19th century, the subject of admiration and study by Spanish and foreign artists. The composition follows the famous model preserved at the Museo Nacional del Prado, traditionally known as “Jester with a Dog” (inv. P001203), one of the most distinctive images in the series of portraits of jesters and court figures painted by the Sevillian master for the court of Philip IV.
The work faithfully reproduces Velázquez’s style, characterized by a composition of great restraint, in which the figure takes on a monumental presence thanks to the economy of means and the masterful balance between space, light, and volume. The inclusion of the dog, discreetly integrated into the scene, is not merely an anecdotal element but helps reinforce the portrait’s human and intimate character, introducing a counterpoint of serenity that accentuates the dignity of the subject.
The extraordinary prestige Velázquez achieved made his portraits of jesters and court figures some of the most studied and reproduced works in Spanish painting, admired by artists such as Goya, Manet, and Sargent.
