Attributed to Esteban Márquez de Velasco, one of the most prominent followers of Murillo’s style, the work reveals the artist’s interest in creating images of great spiritual depth, in which idealized beauty and the restrained expression of religious sentiment take center stage.
Christ is depicted in a half-length pose, in a composition of great sobriety and balance, turned slightly in a three-quarter view as he directs his serene gaze toward the viewer. With one hand he blesses, establishing a direct and silent connection with the viewer, while with the other he holds the crossbeam of the cross, an inseparable symbol of his sacrifice. The combination of the gesture of blessing and the presence of the cross introduces a theological interpretation linked to redemption. The composition focuses all its expressive power on Christ’s face, with its softened features and serene gaze, following the models of spiritual beauty characteristic of the Sevillian school. The delicate rendering of the skin tones, the smooth transitions of light, and the figure’s restrained expression reveal the profound influence of Murillo, whose work had a decisive impact on Sevillian painters of subsequent generations.
Esteban Márquez de Velasco trained in Seville under his uncle, the painter Fernando Márquez Joya, remaining in his studio until 1672. His career was closely linked to the Sevillian art scene and, in particular, to the immense prestige achieved by Murillo, whose human figures, compositions, and formal solutions were widely reinterpreted by his followers. Márquez de Velasco’s body of work, produced in a workshop of considerable activity, was intended both for the local market and for export to the Americas—a circumstance that explains the diversity of quality within his known body of work.
