DESCRIPTION

Workshop of LUIS DE MORALES "The Divine" (Badajoz, 1509 – Alcántara, 1586)
“Virgin and Child.”
Oil on panel. Cradled.
Measurements: 60 x 43.5 cm; 80 x 64.5 cm (frame).
This scene closely follows the famous model of *The Virgin Teaching the Infant Jesus to Write* by Luis de Morales, housed at the San Carlos National Museum in Mexico City—one of the most successful and frequently reproduced images in the Extremaduran master’s oeuvre. The scene, with its moving intimacy, transforms an everyday episode into a meditation on the mystery of the Incarnation. Mary gently holds a small book as she guides the Child in his learning; he, deeply focused, traces his first letters with a quill. The iconography, rooted in humanism and deeply linked to the spirituality of the Counter-Reformation, transcends mere domestic representation to become a powerful allegory of the Divine Word, who writes the word of salvation from childhood. The act of teaching writing also alludes to Christ’s education in the Holy Scriptures and foreshadows his redemptive mission, endowing the scene with a theological content of great subtlety.
The pictorial quality of the work reveals the hand of a painter thoroughly familiar with the techniques of Morales’s workshop. Notable is the exquisite rendering of the faces, with elongated ovals and extremely delicate features, half-closed eyelids, and absorbed expressions that lend the figures an intense spirituality. The skin, rendered with glazes of extraordinary softness, is a hallmark of the master’s technique that intensifies the sculptural effect of the figures and focuses the viewer’s entire attention on the silent dialogue between Mother and Son.
Particularly accomplished are the refined modeling of the hands, the sensitivity in depicting the children’s complexions, and the careful study of the folds in the Virgin’s dark blue cloak—elements that demonstrate a remarkable technical level within the workshop’s output. The limited color palette, dominated by velvety blacks, deep blues, and warm reddish tones, fully reflects the aesthetic language developed by Morales, based on expressive restraint and a deeply internalized emotion.
Far from being a mere replica of Morales’s famous model, this painting offers an interpretation of remarkable personality, in which the artist adapts the prototype with his own sensibility, preserving all the devotional intensity and formal quality that made this composition one of the most celebrated images in Morales’s repertoire.
