The work reveals a careful synthesis of stylistic influences. The elegant anatomy of Christ, rendered with a soft gradation of light and restrained naturalism, recalls the Italian models of the early Baroque, while the meticulous rendering of the skin tones, the delicate folds of the loincloth, and the attention to detail in the landscape evoke the Flemish tradition, characterized by its technical precision and descriptive sensitivity. The enveloping atmosphere, created through a palette dominated by ochres, earth tones, and bluish grays, helps to create a space of quiet spirituality that intensifies the meditative nature of the scene. Particularly noteworthy is the quality of the painterly rendering of the saint’s figure, whose long, copper-toned hair constitutes one of the composition’s principal chromatic accents. The delicacy of her face, the elegant drape of the fabrics, and the naturalness of her expression reveal an artist of remarkable sensitivity, capable of combining emotion and formal balance with extraordinary effectiveness.
The iconography incorporates elements of profound symbolic meaning. The skull and bones at the foot of the cross allude to Mount Golgotha and Christ’s victory over death through his redemptive sacrifice. On the horizon, the small scene of horsemen riding away after the Crucifixion introduces a narrative dimension that expands upon the Gospel account without distracting attention from the main episode, reinforcing the contrast between the bustle of the world and the contemplation of Magdalene, absorbed in gazing upon the Crucified One.
