BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Seville School; 17th century.
“Santa Faz.”
Oil on canvas.
It has patches on the back.
Measurements: 62.5 x 51.5 cm; 74 x 61 cm (frame).
This devotional image, painted in oil on canvas, depicts the face of Christ. The iconography of the Santa Faz has its origins in an episode that occurred during the Passion of Christ, when, on the way to Calvary, a woman removed her veil to wipe the Messiah’s face with it. The image of Jesus Christ’s face was imprinted on the linen handkerchief, which was miraculously preserved over the centuries, becoming an object of worship. The woman would later be called Veronica, a name derived from the Latin “verum” (true) and the Greek “eikon” (image). The Holy Face is one of Christianity’s most famous relics, first described in 1137.
The 17th-century Sevillian school represents one of the most brilliant chapters in Spanish Baroque painting. Fueled by the economic prosperity and intense religious atmosphere of Seville at the time, it developed a style characterized by profound naturalism, delicate devotional sensitivity, and a remarkable mastery of lighting effects. Artists such as Francisco Pacheco, Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Zurbarán, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, and Juan de Valdés Leal defined an aesthetic that combined rigorous drawing with a rich color palette and an extraordinary ability to convey emotion and spiritual contemplation. The iconography of the Santa Faz, with its deeply pious content, found particularly fertile ground in this context, giving rise to images intended to foster contemplation and private devotion.
