Juan José Gárate was formed in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, in Madrid, to later continue his studies in the Academy of Spain in Rome, where he was a disciple of Francisco Pradilla Ortiz. In 1895 his work began to be recognized internationally, as a result of the medals he won at the Berlin Fine Arts Exhibition. This success will be repeated in 1905 in the Universal of Paris, in the Hispano-French of Saragossa of 1908 (Great Diploma of Honor) and in the International of Panama of 1916 (gold medal). In 1897 he was appointed professor of coloring and composition at the Academy of Fine Arts of Zaragoza, and in 1909 he obtained the position of acting special professor at the School of Arts and Industries of the same city. During these years he made several trips to Germany and Italy, until he finally settled in Madrid in 1911. In this city he held frequent exhibitions, always obtaining the favor of the public, and he even obtained the second medal in the National Exhibition of 1904, with a work that was acquired by King Alfonso XIII. He is currently represented in the Prado Museum (work on deposit at the Museum of Zaragoza), the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Malaga and other public and private collections.
