BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Circle of GARI MELCHERS (United States, 1860-1932).
"Mother with Child," ca. 1900
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 70 x 47 cm; 90 x 67 x 5 cm (frame).

The oil painting "Mother and Child", attributed to the circle of Gari Melchers, is a work that exudes tenderness and solemnity in equal parts, faithful to the humanist spirit and pictorial sensitivity that characterize the famous American artist. This painting masterfully captures the echoes of Gari Melchers' style, especially the deep empathy for the everyday, which is elevated to an almost sacred scene of maternal intimacy. A young woman, wearing a modest bonnet, holds her child in her arms. She bends down delicately, placing her lips on the infant's forehead, a visual caress that summarizes the maternal bond. The woman wears a coat sumptuously embroidered with floral motifs that evoke fertility and spiritual beauty, recurring elements in Melcher's ideology. On her left hand shines a gold ring, a discreet but unmistakable emblem of commitment, perhaps to motherhood itself, beyond its conjugal dimension. The child, wrapped in an orange blanket, has a plump face, in which his diaphanous blue eyes stand out like beacons, looking at us, questioning us. The background of the work, barely suggested, reveals a landscape of subdued vegetation, where greens, ochers, browns and oranges seem to have migrated from nature to the clothes of the protagonists. This subtle chromatic dialogue between figure and environment is not fortuitous: it is a form of symbolic fusion, where mother and child emerge as an expression of the same vital cycle that is insinuated in the landscape. The entire painting is resolved in a tonal harmony of soft hallmarks, bathed in a golden light that recalls the enveloping atmospheres of the Dutch masters who so influenced Melchers.
