The pictorial style of James B. Dalziel is framed within the tradition of nineteenth-century British landscape painting. His work is characterized by a solid technique and a sensitive interpretation of the nature of the British Isles. His artistic production focused mainly on the representation of idyllic rural scenes, characterized by their serene atmosphere and detailed observation of the environment. Wooded landscapes are recurrent in his production.
James B. Dalziel was a landscape painter who lived in Camden Town, Kentish Town and Westminster, London. He exhibited seven works at the Royal Academy, seven at the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street, and three at the British Institution. When he first exhibited at the Academy in 1852, his address was 3 Camden Street North. From 1854, the well-known wood engraving firm Dalziel Brothers was based at 4 Camden Street North and, in 1858, a John Dalziel (perhaps the Dalziel brother who worked for the firm between 1852 and 1868) is listed in the London Gazette as residing at number 3. Therefore, it is likely that James B. Dalziel was related to the family of artists and engravers who founded the firm.
