DESCRIPTION
PETER RUDOLF KARL HERBSTOFFER (Pressburg, now Bratislava, 1821 - Austria, 1876).

This panel by Herbstofer presents a genre scene where a peasant woman, immersed in prayer for her deceased loved one, is surrounded by her sobbing children. The amber light that bathes the composition confers a glorious and emotional tone to the scene. The mowing tools, arranged on the left, symbolize the continuity of life and the inescapable need of the young woman to support her family.
Although little is known about his biography, we know that Peter Rudolf Karl Herbstoffer studied at the Vienna Academy with Father V. Amerling and began exhibiting in 1841.
