This pair of oil paintings, signed by R. Hörde, portrays with a marked realistic style scenes of the daily life of women in a fishing community. Both are of port theme and oval format. In one of them, a young woman, as the central figure, is standing in the water, dressed in work clothes and holding a large salabre (a hand net). Her posture is one of concentration and effort. Behind her, another woman performs a similar task, while in the background the silhouettes of numerous sailboats are moored, creating a very defined port atmosphere. The color palette is sober, dominated by earth tones, grays and ochers, which reflect the light of a cloudy day on the water. In the painting on the right, two women are returning from work. One of the young women deftly balances a heavy basket on her head and carries another on her arm. She is dressed in traditional attire that includes a red vest and wooden clogs, characteristic elements of period dress in some European coastal areas. Next to her, a female companion also carries a basket. In the background, more boats and the figure of a man working on the beach can be distinguished.
The two works function as a diptych that narrates different moments of the same work. The artist demonstrates a great ability to capture the realistic details, from the textures of the fabrics and the wicker baskets to the expression of effort and resilience in the women's faces.
