BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

English school following models of the 18th century; 19th century.
"Bust of a young man".
Oil on canvas.
It has a Puncture in the canvas.
It has a frame of the nineteenth century.
Measurements: 42 x 36 cm; 55 x 45 cm (frame).
Anonymous portrait of the XIX century that shows the youthful figure, of melancholic face and contained gesture, evokes the sentimentalism typical of Greuze's art, who was famous for portraying moralizing and expressive scenes, often with young protagonists that transmit contained emotions.
The tenebrist lighting, which highlights the young man's face and neck with a soft light that blends into a dark background, reinforces the intimate drama of the scene.
Portraiture in the English school of the 19th century was of fundamental importance as a means of social, moral and aesthetic expression. In an era marked by the expansion of the British Empire and the rise of the bourgeoisie, the portrait was consolidated as a status symbol and vehicle of identity. Artists such as Sir Thomas Lawrence and George Frederic Watts explored both the idealized representation of the aristocracy and the psychological dimension of the individual. Through portraiture, nineteenth-century English painting managed to balance the formal elegance inherited from the previous century with a growing sensitivity to emotion, character and intimacy, anticipating the transformations of modern art.
