ERNESTO SOLER DE LAS CASAS (Barcelona, 1864 - 1935)
"Landscape" 1918
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated in the lower left corner.
Presents faults in the frame.
Measurements: 112 x 104 cm; 130 x 122 cm (frame).
This landscape shows the characteristic chromatic lyricism of Ernesto Soler. The loose and nuanced brushstroke, together with an almost dreamlike atmosphere, reveals a sensibility close to post-impressionism and landscape symbolism, where nature is transformed into an emotional rather than descriptive vision.
Son of Serafí Pitarra (playwright and founder of the modern Catalan Theater), Ernesto Soler de las Casas stood out especially in the realization of landscapes, seascapes and genre paintings, and was trained in a private academy in Barcelona. Already in 1885 he took part, with four oil paintings and two watercolors, in the exhibition of the Center of Watercolorists of Barcelona. Since then he participated regularly in exhibitions and competitions in Barcelona, including those of 1891, 1894, 1896, 1896, 1911, 1918, 1919 and 1922, being distinguished and awarded in some of them.
