JOAQUIM MIR TRINXET (Barcelona, 1873 - 1940).
"Cart on the road".
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Presents craquelure and a small lack of paint.
Measurements: 39 x 51 cm.
In this composition, Joaquim Mir displays a scene of rural landscape animated by a cart pulled by mules that advances along a road, with buildings in the background and lush vegetation that surrounds the scene. The brushstroke is loose and vibrant, built with color stains that prioritize atmosphere and light over descriptive detail. Ochre, green and blue tones intertwine with great freedom, generating a sensation of movement and depth.
The work is fully inscribed in the luminist and post-impressionist sensibility that characterizes the production of Mir, one of the great renovators of Catalan landscape painting. More than a topographical description, the artist offers an emotional interpretation of the environment, where color acquires a structural and expressive role, anticipating plastic solutions that place him among the key figures of modernism and Catalan painting of the early twentieth century.
Joaquín Mir is today considered the most outstanding representative of Spanish post-impressionist landscape painting. His work is preserved in the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, among many others.
