The portrait presents a young mother holding her baby in her lap, barely visible under the blankets. Of the woman, with white skin and delicately modeled, only the elongated bust is shown; she bows her head and lowers her gaze, absorbed in the intimate contemplation of the child, oblivious to any eye contact with the observer of the scene. The red curtain that closes the composition intensifies the collected and theatrical character of the whole.
The work follows the aesthetic models associated with Claude-Marie Dubufe (1790-1864), particularly in the serene idealization of the figures, the softness of the drawing and the restrained elegance of the gesture. As in the portraits of the French academic tradition of the first half of the 19th century, the scene combines domestic intimacy and formal refinement, elevating the maternal representation.
