DESCRIPTION
After JOAQUÍN SOROLLA Y BASTIDA (Valencia, 1863 - Cercedilla, Madrid, 1923).
"The Valencian fishermen".
Oil on canvas cardboard.
Measurements: 50 x 70 cm.
The one we now present is a faithful copy of the work "The Valencian fishermen", oil painted in 1895 on the beach of Valencia. This was Sorolla's brilliant sequel to his painting "La vuelta de la pesca" painted a year earlier.
Joaquín Sorolla was so influential because he was able to renew Spanish painting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries through an exceptional treatment of light and color, creating a luminous and vibrant style that captured the Mediterranean atmosphere with great naturalness. His technical mastery, inherited from the academic tradition, together with a loose and modern brushstroke close to impressionism, made him a reference both in Spain and internationally. In addition, his enormous success in exhibitions in Europe and the United States, together with the diffusion of his portraits and beach scenes, consolidated his prestige and placed him as a model for a whole generation of painters, especially in the Valencian school.
Considered the great master of light, Sorolla evolved from his early costumbrista and social works to his iconic scenes bathed by the Mediterranean sun. Trained at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia, he completed his education in Rome and Paris, absorbing the influence of the great masters and impressionism. His talent led him to conquer the international art scene, with exhibitions in Paris, New York and London. In 1909, his success at the Hispanic Society of America earned him a commission for his monumental "Vision of Spain," a cycle of canvases that captured the country's cultural diversity. His work, celebrated in museums such as the Prado, the Metropolitan and the Sorolla Museum, remains an absolute reference of luminism and the painting of emotion.
