DESCRIPTION
JOAN ROIG SOLER (Barcelona, 1852-1909).
"Landscape".
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 39 x 29 cm; 52 x 45 cm (frame).
In this work Joan Roig Soler represents a luminous landscape of Mediterranean character, structured around a wide road that leads the look towards the horizon. The scene is resolved by means of a vibrant brushstroke, with quick touches of color that build the vegetation and the architectures without stopping in the detail.
The light chromatic range, dominated by ochers, greens and blues, conveys the intensity of the light and the warm atmosphere of the landscape. With this spontaneous and luminous language, Roig Soler captures the immediate impression of the place, privileging the sensation of air and light over the precise description of forms.
Joan Roig Soler began his training with Modest Urgell and later completed his apprenticeship traveling to the great capitals of art, Paris and Rome. Closely linked to Sitges, in this town he initiated, together with Arcadi Mas i Fondevila, the informal Catalan Luminist School.
He was awarded the Third Medal at the National Fine Arts Exhibition of 1887, and received awards at the Paris (1895), Barcelona (1896) and Zaragoza Exhibitions. He is represented in the collections of the Museums of Modern Art of Barcelona and Madrid.
