DESCRIPTION
LUDWIG BRÜLS (Germany, 1803 - Rome, 1882).
"Neapolitan peasants with Franciscans", 1849.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated.
Measurements: 81 x 68 cm; 105 x 94 cm.
The scene is situated in the stillness of a cloister of Romanesque character, where a humble Neapolitan family receives the blessing of two Franciscan friars. The composition articulates a narrative of recollection and devotion, in which the everyday is intertwined with the spiritual. Brüls constructs the image through soft and precise lighting, which delicately models the figures and reinforces the atmosphere of serenity. The detailed treatment of textures, habits, skins and architecture responds to the principles of academic realism, while the emotional charge is inscribed in a late-romantic sensibility, centered on faith, humility and domestic virtue. The work is a representative example of 19th century religious genre painting linked to the German academic tradition. The choice of an intimate subject and the absence of drama emphasize an interiorized spirituality, in keeping with the Romantic fascination with the simple life and devotional experience.
Ludwig Brüls was a painter belonging to the Düsseldorf School, recognized for his genre scenes and religious compositions of meticulous finish. He trained and worked in Antwerp and Rome, where he developed much of his production and consolidated a style characterized by the fusion between spiritual emotion and academic rigor. His works often depict humble families, monastic figures and moments of recollection, treated with meticulous attention to light and texture.
