LUIS GRANER ARRUFÍ (Barcelona, 1863- 1929).
"Port of Barcelona.
Oil on paper.
Measurements: 8 x 12,5 cm; 21 x 25 cm (frame).
In this marine of Lluís Graner i Arrufí, his sensibility for the light and the color characteristic of the Catalan painting of the end of the XIX century is appreciated. Graner combines a naturalistic treatment with an atmospheric sense that conveys the serenity and rhythm of the seascape. The brushstroke, loose but controlled, reflects the movement of the sea and the dispersion of light on the surface.
Graner trained at the Escuela de La Lonja in Barcelona and furthered his studies in Paris thanks to a scholarship, where he stayed for five years and won recognition in international exhibitions. Back in Barcelona, he continued to participate in European and national competitions, winning several medals. He traveled and worked in the United States and Latin America, especially in New York and California, before returning to Barcelona in 1927. His painting, realist in style, focused mainly on scenes of everyday life of humble people, influenced by George Latour in the interiors, although he also cultivated landscapes and portraits. His work is preserved in important museums such as the Prado, the MNAC or the Hispanic Society of New York, among others.
