DESCRIPTION
HERMENEGILDO ANGLADA CAMARASA (Barcelona, 1871 - Pollença, Mallorca, 1959).
"Marina".
Oil on board
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 14.5 × 22.5 cm; 31 × 38 cm (frame).
Small format of great subtlety where Anglada-Camarasa captures a coastal atmosphere through a free painting, almost sketched, in which matter and light acquire all the protagonism. The composition is organized in horizontal stripes -sea, shore and mountain- dissolved in a chromatic vibration of pearly, blue and ochre tones.
The brushstroke, loose and impastoed, builds more sensation than form, anticipating an almost abstract vision of the landscape. Far from detail, the artist focuses on the impression of light and immediate perception, in line with his research on color and atmosphere.
Anglada-Camarasa was one of the key figures of Spanish post-impressionism and one of the Catalan artists with the greatest international projection. Trained in Barcelona and active in Paris since 1894, where he came into contact with the most advanced currents of his time, he participated in important competitions such as the Venice Biennials, where he won the Gold Medal in 1907. His work reached wide circulation in Europe and the United States, consolidating his international prestige. He is currently represented in collections such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) and the Musée d'Orsay, among others.
