Nicolae Vermont was born with the name of Isidor Grünberg, inside a Jewish family. From a young age he showed a clear inclination towards art, which led him to move to Bucharest to train at the School of Fine Arts under the tutelage of Theodor Aman. There he developed the foundations of a career that would soon place him among the most relevant artists of his generation.
Eager to further his education, he traveled to Munich, where he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts. During this period he came into contact with new artistic currents and with other creators who sought to renew the Romanian cultural scene. Influenced also by figures such as Nicolae Grigorescu, Vermont gradually moved away from rigid academicism towards a more lively painting committed to reality.
Upon his return to Romania, he joined the most innovative artistic circles of the time and participated in the creation of movements such as Tinerimea Artistică, which advocated a new aesthetic sensibility. In this context, his work began to stand out for a strong social content: Vermont painted scenes of everyday life, peasants, workers and marginalized people, showing with sensitivity and realism the living conditions of his time.
Over the years, his style incorporated post-impressionist influences without losing his realistic vocation. In addition to easel painting, he worked on murals and in the decoration of buildings and churches, thus expanding his impact on Romanian art.
