ELISEO MEIFRÉN (Barcelona, 1859 - 1940)
"Lake landscape".
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dedicated to the painter Santiago Rusiñol, friend of Meifrén, in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 47 x 72 cm, 65 x 90 cm (with frame).
One of the most outstanding aspects of this Meifrèn's lake landscape is its dedication to Santiago Rusiñol, which is explained by the close affinity between both artists as contemporaries within the Catalan modernism of the late 19th century: They shared artistic circles and the cultural environment of Sitges, where Rusiñol exercised as a central figure and dynamizer -especially through the Modernist Festivals-, while Meifrèn developed a career more focused on landscape painting; although they did not collaborate directly, they coincided in exhibitions and spaces such as Els Quatre Gats and shared aesthetic interests, such as plein air painting and impressionist influence, forming part of the same artistic ecosystem that led to an indirect mutual influence.
In this canvas, Eliseo Meifrén captures with atmospheric sensitivity a serene environment where water, earth and sky merge into a unitary vision. The composition is articulated through a tongue of land that enters the lake, guiding the eye towards a low and open horizon, where vegetation and gentle elevations are diluted in the distance.
The vibrant brushwork reveals the assimilation of impressionism, especially in the treatment of light and the tonal variations of the sky, the undisputed protagonist of the scene. The reflections on the water, constructed by means of transparencies and subtle nuances, provide a sensation of immediacy and capture of the instant, characteristic traits of plein air painting.
Eliseu Meifrén i Roig was one of the main representatives of impressionism in Catalonia. He trained at the Llotja School in Barcelona and furthered his studies in Paris, where he came into contact with the modern currents of European painting.
He exhibited regularly at the Sala Parés in Barcelona and participated in numerous national and international competitions. His work is preserved in important institutions such as the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC), the Museo del Prado, the Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao, as well as in numerous public and private collections.
