Joaquín Damis y Cortés (1842-1920) was a Cadiz painter trained at the School of Fine Arts in Cadiz, where he was educated within the academic tradition of the nineteenth century. His career is characterized by a remarkable thematic diversity and by his active participation in regional and national exhibitions.
From an early date he presented works in public competitions, such as Samson at the Feet of Delilah, The Apparition of the Angel to Gideon and Charon in his Boat, in the Cadiz exhibitions of 1869 and 1870. Later, in the National Exhibition of Madrid in 1871 he showed A Fish Seller, showing his interest in historical and religious themes as well as in genre scenes.
In the Cadiz exhibitions of 1879 and 1880 he continued to expand his repertoire with works such as Una maja, Postigo del Aceite in Seville and various landscapes and portraits, for which he won silver medals. This thematic variety reflects his versatility and his ability to adapt to different pictorial genres. His work has been defined as representative of post-Romantic eclecticism, shared with other artists of his time such as José Pérez Siguimboscum.
