In this work the author offers an idealized alpine vision very of the taste of the XIX century, in which the meticulous observation of the nature is combined with a poetic sensibility inherited from romanticism. Albert Lugardon constructs a scene of apparent simplicity, a group of cattle grazing in a meadow on the shore of a lake, which, however, reveals a complex compositional articulation. The space is organized through a balanced arrangement of planes and the light, carefully studied, models the volumes with precision and endows the scene with a truthful atmosphere, capturing the nuances of the high mountains. The clear palette and the sharpness of the line show the artist's interest in visual fidelity, without renouncing an idealization that elevates the daily scene to an almost contemplative dimension.
This conception responds directly to Lugardon's training and career. Born in Rome in 1827 into a family of artists, he was the son of the history painter Jean-Léonard Lugardon, who introduced him early to artistic practice after his move to Geneva. His subsequent training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris brought him into contact with the teaching of Ary Scheffer, whose influence was decisive in the lyrical dimension of his work. From the mid-nineteenth century, Lugardon established himself as an outstanding painter of alpine landscapes and animal scenes, characterized by a balance between descriptive rigor and an inherited romantic sensibility. His interest in technical advances, especially in photography, reinforced his capacity for observation and analysis of movement and light, aspects that are reflected in the precision of his compositions. At the same time, his involvement in the cultural life of Geneva and his participation in artistic institutions contributed to the dissemination of the Swiss landscape as a relevant genre.
