Orientalism in Italy was an artistic and cultural phenomenon that developed mainly during the 19th century, in parallel to other European countries such as France or England, although with its own characteristics. It was fueled by interest in the eastern Mediterranean, North Africa and the Ottoman Empire, regions with which Italy had closer historical, commercial and geographical ties. Unlike the more fanciful Orientalism of other European contexts, Italian Orientalism tended to rely on direct travel experiences: many artists visited places such as Egypt, Turkey or Morocco, seeking to depict everyday scenes, landscapes and human types with a certain documentary zeal. Painters such as Alberto Pasini or Fausto Zonaro stood out for their detailed scenes of markets, Islamic architecture and urban life in the East.
In this context, the painting of odalisques became one of the most emblematic themes of Orientalism. These Ottoman harem women were depicted as sensual, exotic and passive figures, constructed more from the European imagination than from reality. Although this theme was especially popular in French painting, it also influenced Italian artists, who incorporated these figures into their compositions as a symbol of the idealized Orient.
