This work represents one of the most emblematic themes of the pictorial tradition of the Netherlands: the landscape dominated by water, sky and the presence of windmills. More than a simple rural setting, the painting functions as a visual synthesis of Dutch identity. The composition is dominated by two windmills located next to a canal, accompanied by small buildings and boats. The low horizon gives great prominence to the sky, a characteristic resource of Dutch painting since the 17th century. The wide, shifting clouds, worked with loose brushstrokes and a vaporous atmosphere, generate a sensation of humidity and constant climatic change, typical of the Dutch landscape. The light is soft and diffuse, without excessive drama, which contributes to a serene and contemplative vision of nature.
The pictorial treatment reveals influences of the romantic and naturalistic landscape painting of the 19th century. Although the scene retains a remarkable realism, the visible brushwork and attention to atmospheric effects suggest an interest in capturing light impressions rather than minute details.
