More than focusing exclusively on the evangelical miracle, the painting turns the biblical episode into a vast atmospheric scenography where nature, architecture and the tems are integrated in the same visual experience. The passage depicted, Christ walking on the sea and helping Peter in the midst of the storm, comes from the Gospel of Matthew and symbolizes both faith and human frailty in the face of fear. However, in this painting the sacred story is not treated with the extreme theatrical emphasis of the Roman or Sevillian Baroque, but through a more contemplative and landscape sensibility, characteristic of much of the Majorcan production of the period.
The composition is dominated by a stormy sky of huge cloud masses and a dark sea whose choppy waters reflect flashes of broken light. The real protagonist seems to be the emotional climate of the landscape. The ruined classical architecture on the left, with monumental columns and partially collapsed structures, introduces a motif very typical of Baroque culture: the evocation of antiquity as a sign of the decadence of the earthly world in the face of the eternity of the divine. These constructions also function as a scenographic resource, creating depth and leading the eye towards the maritime horizon where the miracle takes place. The tree bent by the wind intensifies the sensation of instability and serves as a dynamic axis between earth and sky.
The Mallorcan School of the late 17th and early 18th centuries was characterized precisely by this mixture of Italian, Flemish and Spanish influences adapted to an island context open to Mediterranean trade. Mallorca, due to its strategic position, maintained constant contact with Neapolitan and Genoese models, perceptible here in the taste for port landscapes, imaginary architectures and atmospheric lighting effects. Unlike the severe naturalism of other peninsular centers, Mallorcan painting tended towards a more lyrical narrative, where spirituality emerges through the environment.
