Alfred Montague was a 19th century British painter specializing in landscapes and marine scenes, renowned for his detailed and atmospheric depictions of coastal, rural and urban life in England, France and Holland. His work reflects a traditional, idyllic style, with particular attention to Dutch canals, fishing harbors and country landscapes.
Throughout his career he exhibited consistently at leading art institutions such as the Royal Academy, the British Institution and Suffolk Street between 1832 and 1883. In addition, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1843, consolidating his prestige within British painting at the time.Montague worked mainly in oil on canvas and board, creating compositions of great detail and luminous sensitivity.
