This work clearly belongs to the tradition of the bourgeois portrait of the Spanish school of the XIX century, in a moment of transition between the last echoes of Romanticism and the consolidation of a sober and psychological realism. The sitter is depicted half-length, with a gently turned frontal position and a direct gaze that establishes an immediate relationship with the viewer. The composition responds to the academic models inherited from Spanish court portraiture, although adapted to a more intimate and bourgeois sensibility.
From the stylistic point of view, the painting shows a marked concern for the psychological capture of the individual. The artist avoids any anecdotal or decorative excess and concentrates his attention on the face and hands. The painting is characterized by a restrained brushstroke and a soft modeling, especially visible in the treatment of the face and the flesh tones. The lighting, lateral and subdued, emerges from a dark and neutral background that recalls the Spanish tenebrist tradition. The work shows the influence of academic portraiture cultivated in institutions such as the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, where precise drawing and verisimilitude were essential principles. However, the work also reveals a modern sensibility in the attention to the psychological presence of the model, anticipating certain realist approaches of the second half of the 19th century.
