In this delicate portrait of a woman, Ramon Casas displays some of the qualities that established him as one of the great portraitists of Catalan Modernism. The figure is depicted in a bust portrait, with her face slightly turned and a restrained, introspective expression, rendered with loose yet precise brushstrokes. The work combines the immediacy of a sketch with a careful psychological sensitivity, focusing attention on the face, the downcast gaze, and the soft lighting of the skin tones.
The dark background, rendered with vibrant texture, envelops the figure and accentuates the elegance of the composition. Against this backdrop, the warm tones of the dress and the small floral accent add chromatic richness without detracting from the subject’s expression. The fluid and confident brushwork reveals Casas’s ability to suggest character, atmosphere, and distinction with great economy of means.
Ramón Casas was an artist renowned for his illustrations and portraits, and his female portraits in particular bring together both aspects of his work, given that the female figure constituted the very essence of his posters and illustrations. From the very beginning, Casas showed a clear predilection for portraiture and a special mastery for capturing reality through a language entirely his own—synthetic, expressive, and modern—which left behind the decorativism and symbolism of the prevailing Art Nouveau style. As early as 1899, at just thirty-two years old, he opened a retrospective exhibition of his work in Barcelona. This exhibition introduced the public to his collection of more than one hundred charcoal portraits of prominent figures of the time, all created that same year. This exhibition established Casas as the finest portraitist of his time, thanks not only to his formal mastery but also to his perfect psychological portrayal of his subjects. In this case, it is a study the painter created for the work “You’ll Have to Step Over My Dead Body” or “Summer Study,” now in the collection of the National Art Museum of Catalonia.
