DESCRIPTION
JOSÉ BERMEJO SOBERA (Madrid, 1879 – documented until 1949).
Untitled, 1909.
Oil on canvas. Relined.
It has slight imperfections on the painted surface.
Signed, dated, and located (Paris).
Measurements: 200 x 97 cm.
Oil on canvas featuring a female nude as the main subject. The woman, standing in the foreground, is wearing only shoes. She rests one hand on her forehead, slightly covering her face, while with the other hand she holds a bright pink and white fabric that spreads across the floor of the interior where she stands. Both the soft, luminous colors and the rounded forms succeed in recreating a dreamlike atmosphere.
José Bermejo Sobera worked in painting and poster art and was a great draftsman, known (and appreciated) above all for his works depicting Madrid’s local customs. He began his artistic training at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid, furthering his education through travels and stays in Paris and Rome. He participated in exhibitions at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, the Salón Cano, and the National Exhibitions of Spain (Third Prize in 1901, Second Prize in 1904 and 1908, and the top prize in 1926), and at the 1911 Munich International Exhibition (Second-Class Gold Medal)... He also worked as a professor of Artistic Drawing at the School of Arts and Crafts in the capital. His works are held in various private collections and in institutions such as the Prado Museum in Madrid, the Museum of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in the same city, and the Museum of La Rioja in Logroño, for example.
